Is Your Roof Right for Solar Panels?
If you’re considering solar energy, one of the first questions that comes up is:
“Can solar panels work on my roof?”
At Solar Suffolk, we know every home is different. That’s why we don’t believe in a one size fits all approach to solar design. Our experienced team carries out a thorough assessment and feasibility study of your property to design a solar system that delivers maximum efficiency and long term performance. If we don’t think solar is feasible for your property we’ll let you know.
Whether you have a pitched roof, flat roof, extension, garage or even a shed, we’ll find the perfect setup for your property. Here’s what we consider when evaluating your home:
Roof Size
The amount of available roof space determines how many panels you can install and ultimately how much energy you can generate. Our design experts will measure your usable roof area and create a system tailored to your energy needs and property layout.
While a larger roof can accommodate more panels, bigger isn’t always better. The ideal solar system balances energy generation with cost effectiveness. For most Suffolk homes, a 4kW system is sufficient to meet typical energy needs. Installing more panels can increase output, but with current export rates lower than historic feed in tariffs, it often makes more sense to install what you need to cover your usage.
Roof Orientation and Pitch
In the UK, a south facing roof with a pitch of 30° to 40° provides optimal solar performance. Don’t worry if your roof faces east or west, panels still work efficiently with smart systems design. Even flat roofs are suitable, using specialised mounting solutions that set panels at the best angle for maximum energy capture.

Shading
Shading can reduce a system’s efficiency but it doesn’t mean your roof can’t generate solar power. Our team can design around obstacles like chimneys, trees or nearby buildings that produce shading. Using solutions such as power optimisers and a SolarEdge system, at Solar Suffolk we can design a system that maximises your roof space and generates effectively.
Roof Condition
A structurally sound roof is essential for solar installations. Our technicians will check for wear, damage or ageing before any work begins. If repairs are needed, it’s best to complete them first, before your solar PV system is installed. Solar panels last a minimum of 30 years, so you want a solid base to benefit fully from decades of performance.
Roofing Material
Most roof types are compatible with solar panels, including, asphalt or tile, metal, flat roofs with membranes or gravel and wooden roofs (provided additional fire safety measures have been added successfully). Some roofs however aren’t suitable; thatched, glass or asbestos containing roofs unfortunately would not be suitable for solar installation (asbestos roofs would need the asbestos removed safely before installation would be allowed). If your roof isn’t ideal, there is still options available to you, our solar experts can discuss alternative solutions such as ground mounted panels or a battery storage system.

Custom Solar Solutions for Every Home
Even if your roof isn’t “perfect”, solar may still be an option. At Solar Suffolk, we explore all possibilities, from unique mounting methods to creative panel layouts to ensure your system is both safe and efficient.
